DARKTHRONE

The following interview has been made by M. for his own italian paper zine God Putrefaction. Here you have the english version of the conversation with Mr. Fenriz, as the italian one is included in the 3rd issue of the over mentioned zine.
The zine is out right now (summer 2009 e.v.) comes out in a5, xeroxed paper as in the good old times, made in cut and paste style, so if you are interested into a copy of this piece of paper get in contact with huginnproduction@libero.it to have it. The zine is written in ITALIAN only and is handnumbered.
Enjoy the words and support the underground!

1. hell-o darkthrone! and wellcome on god putrefaction! first of all!your last album kick ass!really!!! a mix of blackpunkheavymetal music that fit his roots back in the 80's! this make me feel younger!!!hehehehehe!!!
will this be your style for the future releases? are you working on something new?

we never make plans.
we become what we become. it's not about making it to an END point, it is the way there that we build.
since 87 we quickly changed styles, but in 1996 i got burned out and so my side of things came to a halt. i hinted at thrash metal again on one song of TOTAL DEATH in 96. then i made very primitive bm on ravishing grimness and plaguewielder in 99 and 01, before making more punk styles in 2002 on Hate Them mixed with 80s bm like Celtic, Hellhammer, Slaughter. also in 2004. also in 2005 on the cult is alive, but now we had finally our own studio, WHICH WE WANTED in 88 but we couldn't afford and also the whole idea got lost. so we found ourselves again in 88 style in 2005 and now could free ourselves totally to do much older styles of metal than what we had done before.
this work continues, since 2006 we made a mix of heavy metal speed metal, nwobhm-punk and black. on the new one there isn't any black metal left, atleast what has been called "black metal" since 1993.
we are proudly stuck in 70s 80s and even 60s.

2. i like very much your f.o.a.d./darkthrones and black flags attitude, but many of the old fans don't accept it very much... i suppose you don't care about, but the answer is... why (for you) this people don't understand your actual musical style?

they are slaves of copycat 90s. to them, the metal world looks totally different than for us growing up in the 70s and 80s. 90s were the decade when all metal styles died, even t-shirt designs from the 90s suck. there were many good bands, but got lost in all the crap. and now the Overground (big magazines) carries the shit heritage on, but the 00s showed a new generation of kids that saw the wrongness of the 90s and
immediately started to worship true 80s and even 70s style and sound.
i always care, i take it very personal every single one that does not understand what i do in music. so i do care. darkthrone is my lifes work (not some 90s project as someone insists to "think") and so every time someone misunderstands or talks shit, it's like throwing shit in my face.
i will see you all in hell, little crybabies

3. your opinion about the "i wanna be true" attitude that infest the underground...

it's always been there. most importantly is to be true to oneself, always questioning why one likes this or that in music, but also having the guts to LET GO to like other styles of music.
people that didn't study music or metal underground for many years have problems noticing: music is about CYCLES, it's not only about HARD and NOT HARD, but also MAXIMALISM/MINIMALISM and every decades has also it's typical RHYTHMS. most of people critizizing all the time doesn't even know these things because it takes a long time to notice it, and mostly younger people are the ones that throw around
their opinion so easily all the time, in 20 years most of them will roll up in a ball and be ashamed why they shared their infantile opinions on an internet forum (the garbage dumps of the brave new world haha)

4. you are a mythological band in the heavy metal world... do you feel you as a "rock star" or do you still feel "underground"?

it's enough to visit our myspace to see that i answer myself and i use most of the time to promote other bands. however, when people treat me like a rock star i choose to stay away from all social events and my personality is being forced to stay away and only work in the underground. when i dj'ed inferno festival in 2004 and people lined up not to ask me about music but my autograph - it was my final farewell to the black sheep of metal. for now. when they don't care about the music but only me, it is against everything i fight for. i hate idolism.

5. i know you have many other interests like making movies (the mysanthrope from nocturno culto) and taking care about woods and norse nature.can you speak us about this activities?
is darkthrone your main artistical interst?

darkthrone IS me.
i don't make movies, i never held a camera for more than a few minutes cuz someone told me to. i take photos in the forest.
we have 1560 square KILOMETRES of forest around Oslo. this is my second big interest, and i work to promote and preserve this and many other things i do in the forest. music and wildlife are my main interests. i have nothing i owe, not even a car. i only have insane music collection and wildlife equipment for alot of money haha.
also i am member of several organizations for the forests here
SKIFORENINGEN
NATURVERNFORBUNDET I OSLO OG AKERSHUS
ØSTMARKAS VENNER
LILLOMARKAS VENNER
SØRMARKAS VENNER

everyone can google this

6. you (fenriz) played in many side projects in the past; bands like storm, neptune towers, isengard, dodheimsgard, etc... do you still have some musical side projects?

no, since 2002 i only did darkthrone and it's quite enough.
i could quit my day job (i had a day job sorting mail etc since 1988) and only sit in front of the computer answering people. but i hate the computer screen)

7. do you still follow the underground?if yes what do you think about?

it's Dan Lilker, Katon D Pena and me from the 80s that are still into the underground in a big way. i haven't seen many others really involved. and those two are 5 years older than me, so they are the kings and i am the little necro prince haha active bands i support:
BAZOOKA (TAIWAN), DAMNED GRAVE, ATOMKINDER, FESTERED, ATOMIC ROAR,

etc

8. will the rottenzombiepunk on the last two covers become your new symbol? something like eddie for iron maiden?

in early 90s also the record covers turned to shit. i stopped involving myself in record covers in 1995. i didn't care about visuals anymore, i just cared for music.
the result we can already see in the following album covers, only photoshop stuff that isn't my style.
in 2006 i again take charge of covers, and make some kind of mini-magazine. and the covers will now have to be HANDMADE painting or drawing - or photos in the future. these photoshop computer covers are "looking good estetically" but will never grace a true metallers wall hahahaha. good record covers for metal are drawings or photos.
like SHOW NO MERCY or THE DAY OF WRATH. capice?

9. thanx a lot for your time and for your music! cheers and to you the last word!
